This site is a great reference for typefaces that you aren't familiar with. Navigation through the website is pretty simple. From the above URL click on the period of time that you are researching. Then select the type of fonts you're looking for (Serif, Sans Serif, Decorative, etc...). You can't download fonts directly off their website but they'll refer you to sites that you can buy fonts from.
